Where did my journey start!

As a little girl I had an art teacher who I will never forget!  Her name was Julie Dixon and she was able to turn every student that came through her door into an artist!  I remember my very first project was to paint a picture of my Granny!  Now I didn’t have the traditional grey-haired granny you see in pictures, so I wasn’t sure what to do.  What made it more difficult was that my two grannies were worlds apart. One was English and outgoing and full of fun and laughter while my Ouma was a traditional farm woman who worked really hard on the farm but was by no means old and fragile as pictures depicted granny’s to be.  So basically, I had to paint a picture of a woman whom I loved dearly as I loved both my granny and my Ouma with my whole heart.  She helped me to paint from my heart and that painting won me an award for my art that year at school.

Sadly, Mrs Dixon was not around for my whole school career or I may have continued doing art and explored my creative side a lot sooner, but I then was lead to believe I was not artistic and gave up on art!  I couldn’t draw so therefore I was told I was not artistic!

I never tried my hand at ANYTHING creative again until I was about 21 when my mom came home with some stamps and ink that somebody had brought to her and they were having fun with it.  I got some embossing powder which we originally heat embossed over the toaster (hehehehe) and I fell in love with making greeting cards!  My creative and artistic side was somewhere inside me and it started to emerge.

So why am I telling you all of this?  Well its simple, every single one of us has an artistic and creative side when you make something from your heart!  I remember my mom and my Ouma always wanted hand-made gifts, but I never believed I was good enough at that, but when I made something from my heart no matter what it came out like it was appreciated.  The effort you put into something from your heart is always felt by the person receiving it.  Whether it is a gift or a card the receiver will always appreciate the extra effort it took to make something yourself.

Here at Starfish Designs we want to help you bring a little bit of joy into your life and well as those you love.  So whether it is for yourself or a gift we want to help bring out your inner artist and spread the love and joy!
